testing colors on walls before painting |
|
Once again, a HGTV designer show sparked this topic.
Question - To test a few colors on a "wall" before painting, for best results... NEVER USE A BRUSH, (especially right at eye level in the middle of the wall)! Unless of coarse, you are planning on brushing on the entire wall.
WHY?
Brushes leave brush marks. When you finally roll the chosen wall color on, you will see the obvious brush marks, definitely a difference in texture where the brush was stroked; even if you feathered/smothened out your test. Smothing out the brush is also n ot recommended because it will leave a "smoother" look there as well.
A much better way to test colours is: Use a tiny disposable roller commonly found at most quality paint stores (those little wire handled 2" rollers). These little rollers are cheap and can fit in a pocket. They produce very professional results for many applications. When testing colours a general rule is to use the tool you are finishing the surface with. If you have no choice but to use a brush, take a tissue after you brushed on the test colour and try and dab out the brush marks creating a more desirable nap appearance.
Another example: If you are testing for trim color and planning to use a brush for the final coat, you would use a brush to test a color, not a roller because the roller would create a nap mark.
