How much do I thin my paint? |
|
Traditional Interior Wall Painting: I usually never thin paint that I am rolling. I do however, always thin the paint that I am cutting (using a brush) around trim and ceilings, taking in consideration that I will need more coats from the cut because of this.
Why do I mainly thin my paint?
Its much easier to cut a line with thinner paint than thick. Thick paint also leaves more ridges and lines from the brush hairs. Also, when you thin paint it tends to dry duller. There is a very good reason why I take advantage of this. I want my cut to be less shinny so I add a bit of water to my cutting pail. I don't want my brush areas to stand out from the wall, cabinets, around railings etc. so I thin my paint just enough so I can manage it better and so the shean dries near or just a bit flatter (duller) than the rest of the wall. This is a super tip for professional painters in the high end interior market.
The down side to thinning paint is it can take an extra coat to cover your brushed on areas. For high end painting (opposite of fast and cheap), I am not at all concerned in covering walls in one coat. I am totally concerned in how my work looks, not how fast I can get the job done. These methods produce the highest quality I know of. You rarely see brush marks if you thin (reduce) your cut.
How do I know how much to thin my paint?
When you can paint a smooth, (non ridge or globby) line... it just right!
What do I thin my paint with?
Oil paint.... solvent, paint thinner etc.
Acrylic paint... I use water because I am looking to dull my paint a bit. However, Flotrol is also recommended for some additional reasons.
