Painting Ceilings

Painting a wood plank ceiling

We primed this wood ceiling with B.I.N. shellac then caulked the seams with DAP 230.

After allowing a few days for the caulking to cure we top coated it with a matt finish thinking the low sheen would help hide the imperfection but in this case it still looked old and drab so we repainting it once again but this

time in Aura satin and it looked much better!

Painting Flat ceilings

How to paint flat ceilings to not show roller lines?

Painting Flat Ceilings

The best flat paint to use have more chalk and less resin. The flattest paint is primer. Primer makes awesome ceiling paint that also lasts for decades. We've been painting flat ceilings with high-quality primers for 40 years. Our ceilings look amazing!

Being said,

Ceiling paint

If you are concerned about paint dripping onto your face and flooring you can use paint specifically made for painting ceilings. Ceiling paint has a gel added to the paint which helps reduce spatter and dripping.

Painting plastic ceiling fans

In this example, we painted an old but still very well-running bathroom exhaust ceiling fixture white.

Rather than leaving it to look old and ugly, spraying it white while painting the ceiling simultaneously was easy enough. To do this properly and to avoid bleeding, we first cleaned and primed the plastic with B.I.N. shellac stain blocker and then top-coated it with the same paint as the ceiling to look a lot better!

Painting Ceilings

We generally use an airless sprayer for large ceilings and a roller for smaller ones.

Most ceilings look the best when you apply a flat finish however if wash-ability is the goal you may want a higher gloss finish which comes in eggshell, pearl, satin, semi or even high gloss finishes.

Painting Textured Ceilings

If a textured ceiling has never been painted before.

SPRAY IT!

(Basic process) Benjamin Moore flat acrylic paint,  Titan 440 or 640 airless sprayer).

Ceiling texture is a water base product:  When you apply a water base paint to unpainted texture, it softens it. If you use a roller, you will end up with the texture softening and loosening off the ceiling, dropping to your face and the floor. If you are a DIY (not hiring a professional painter), chances are you will actually ruin your ceiling. Hire a professional painter.

That being said: You can roll them but you you are best using on oil base paint. Oil won't soften the texture. Be sure to cover your entire floor with drop sheets.

Spraying is the best way to paint textured ceilings that have never been painted.

Once a textured ceiling HAS BEEN PAINTED, you can re-roll them without fear because the texture will be sealed and hard.
