How to refinish & paint kitchen cabinets to look new again.

If the goal is to paint kitchen cabinets to look new again, we always start by sanding nicks and dents down to clean wood. We never use TSP on wood being primed, especially with shellac and we never substitute degreasers as a way to bypass sanding. For paint to look new and to adhere properly, especially over old lacquer cabinets, sanding the finish down to clean wood is the key to our excellent cabinet restoration.

Why we don't use Lacquer

Which is better, Lacquer, pre- or post-catalyzed lacquer (epoxy formula) or paint?

Below is an example of why we don’t use pre- or post-catalyzed lacquer (epoxy formula). Example of a pigment lacquer cabinet door finish failing only after a few years. Pre or post-catalyzed lacquer (epoxy formula) fails like the rest of the finishes, especially if they weren’t primed properly.

Disassembling | Reassembling

The disassembling usually takes no more than a few hours. We remove all the doors and drawers and disassemble everything but the cabinet shells. You do not need to remove all the dishes but may have to remove some items in drawers. Once the disassembling is done we take everything off-site to be sanded, refinished and spray painted. You can continue using your kitchen until we return in about a week to finish the remaining sections requiring hand painting.
